I was surprised wen India Arie opened up her mouth to sing:
"I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am not your expectations no no".
Because you are your hair and you are your skin. I don't really know what she meant exactly or even personally but these two things you are because of these two, hair and skin, you are you and these are what defend you despite expectations. I would expect you to say these are you since these are exhibits of your Melanin.
